Six subjects, three at HL
One from each group, with a language, a second language, an individuals-and-societies subject, a science, mathematics and usually an art or a second science. Higher Level papers go further and are marked to a different standard, not just a longer one.
Internal Assessment in every subject
Coursework your own teacher marks first, with the IB then sampling and adjusting those marks across the school. Depending on the subject it carries a fifth to a third of the grade, it lands while five other subjects are also due, and it is where a Diploma most often slips away without anyone noticing.
The core — Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, CAS
The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent piece; Theory of Knowledge an essay and an exhibition. Together they contribute up to three points, which is the difference between an offer and a near miss more often than students expect.

Why it matters
What a IB Diploma score is for
The Diploma is the qualification universities worldwide are most confident reading, because it is the same programme everywhere and the grades mean the same thing in every country. That is precisely why it is demanding: a 38 from one school and a 38 from another are genuinely comparable, so there is nowhere for a weak subject to hide. Its other feature matters for admissions — it is two years of assessed work rather than one set of exams, which means help arriving at the right moment is worth far more than help arriving at the end.

Where marks go
Where candidates lose marks on the IB Diploma
Not a list of study tips. These are the specific ways this particular test takes marks off people who know the material.
An Internal Assessment research question that is too wide
The single most common failure across subjects. A question you cannot control in a school laboratory or answer in the word count produces a piece that scores badly on criteria the student never read. Narrowing it early is worth more than any amount of later writing.
Starting the Extended Essay too late
Four thousand words is not the problem; the research is. Essays begun a term late are written from whatever sources were reachable in a fortnight, and the marking criteria for methodology notice.
Treating Theory of Knowledge as unmarked
TOK and the Extended Essay together are worth up to three points. Students who write off the core are giving away the margin that decides conditional offers.
Preparing HL from SL material
Higher Level is not Standard Level with more questions. The HL extensions are assessed differently and the papers expect a different depth of justification. Revising from the wrong level is a slow way to under-perform.
Losing a subject in the second term of Year 1
The IB's difficulty is cumulative. A subject that stops making sense in the second term is still a problem eighteen months later, and it costs far more to fix then than it would have cost at the time.
Command terms read as suggestions
Explain, evaluate, justify, discuss — each has a defined meaning in IB marking and a different expected response. Answering a 'evaluate' question with a description is a mark-scheme failure, not a knowledge failure.

How the teaching works
A diagnostic before anything is planned
The first session is spent finding out where the marks are actually going. That is not a formality: on most of these tests the gap a student describes and the gap the diagnostic shows are different, and hours spent on the described one are hours wasted.
Teaching in the order your deadline allows
A group course works through the syllabus in a fixed order because a class of six has to. One-to-one starts with whatever is costing you most and works outwards, which is why it suits a retake or a short runway better.
Timed work from early, not saved for the end
Untimed accuracy is a poor predictor of a timed score, and finding that out three weeks before the test is too late. Timed sections start in the first fortnight, short at first.
Review and progress checks
Review looks beyond the mark: which errors recur, whether the reasoning is clearer and how accuracy holds under time pressure. Bring earlier attempts to the discussion so the next practice has a specific purpose.
All of it runs in the browser, live, with a teacher on the other end. There are no recordings sold as a course and no premises to travel to.

How long IB Diploma preparation takes
A rough shape rather than a promise. People arrive at different starting points and the plan is built around yours, but this is what a full run usually looks like.

Pre-IB — before Year 1 starts
Bridging the gap between a national curriculum and the Diploma's expectations, particularly in mathematics and the sciences. It is the cheapest intervention in the whole programme and the one fewest students take.

Year 1 — subject support as the coursework moves
Help arriving while a topic is live rather than a year later. Prepaid packages are not tied to one subject precisely because which subject needs the hours changes through the year.

Mid-IB and the Internal Assessments
The transition into Year 2, plus IA supervision from research question to final draft. Sixty-minute sessions, because a session about a document works differently from a session about a topic.

- No, but the work changes shape. Year 2 support is triage: the subjects holding the total down, the Extended Essay if it is behind, and revision against the mark schemes. Starting in Year 1 buys more for the same money.
- What is Pre-IB and do I need it?
- Preparation before the Diploma starts, aimed at the gap between a national curriculum and IB expectations. Students moving from a system with less independent written work benefit most, particularly in the sciences and mathematics.
